In Washington, D.C., efforts are underway to amplify economic growth and job creation in North Louisiana as Congresswoman Julia Letlow urges the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to grant a significant economic development designation to the Ouachita River. Designating the 605-mile river as Marine Highway M-165 could enhance the river's role in facilitating commerce, reducing highway congestion, and boosting freight movement. This designation is crucial for the region's agricultural sector, offering more export opportunities for commodities like rice, soybeans, cotton, and timber.
The designation under America's Marine Highway Program would enable local agencies, industries, and shippers to become eligible for additional DOT grants aimed at infrastructure improvements. In a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Letlow emphasized the economic benefits that the designation could bring.
"Expanding the use of the Ouachita River will improve supply chain reliability, lower transportation costs, and support economic stability for businesses and communities across Louisiana," stated Letlow. "I have requested the Department of Transportation to make this designation that will recognize the immense potential of the Ouachita River and will advance regional and national economic interests."
Additionally, Letlow congratulated Secretary Duffy on his recent confirmation as the Transportation Secretary.
