WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) has announced that Cameron Parish in Louisiana will receive $6,078,485.00 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for Hurricane Laura relief efforts. The funds will be used to mitigate flood risks and elevate residential structures in the area.

Specifically, Cameron Parish will receive $5,759,235.00 to support the mitigation of 25 flood-prone residential structures. An additional $319,250.00 will be allocated to elevate 25 residential structures located within the Special Flood Hazard Area.

"Since Hurricane Laura hit over three years ago, Louisiana has shown its resiliency," said Dr. Cassidy. "This funding will ensure our state is prepared for the next storm."

The devastation caused by Hurricane Laura in August 2020 was extensive, particularly in southwest Louisiana. The storm resulted in significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and the environment. The funding provided by FEMA will play a crucial role in helping Cameron Parish recover and enhance its resilience against future disasters.

The allocation of $5,759,235.00 for the mitigation of flood-prone residential structures will aid in reducing the vulnerability of these homes to future flooding events. By implementing measures such as raising foundations, installing flood barriers, and improving drainage systems, the risk of damage from future storms will be minimized.

Additionally, the $319,250.00 designated for elevating residential structures within the Special Flood Hazard Area will further protect these homes from potential floodwaters. This investment will enable homeowners to elevate their structures to a safer level, reducing the likelihood of costly damages and ensuring the safety of residents during future storms.

The announcement by Senator Cassidy underscores the commitment of the federal government to supporting communities affected by natural disasters. By providing financial assistance, FEMA is helping Cameron Parish and other areas in Louisiana to recover, rebuild, and become more resilient in the face of future challenges.

As Cameron Parish continues to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Laura, this funding will be instrumental in restoring and fortifying the affected areas. It serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Louisiana in rebuilding their communities.

Through initiatives like these, Louisiana and its residents are taking proactive measures to prepare for the next storm and mitigate potential damages. The allocation of $6,078,485.00 to Cameron Parish is a step towards building a more resilient Louisiana, one that is better equipped to withstand future hurricanes and protect its citizens.

In the words of Dr. Cassidy, "This funding will ensure our state is prepared for the next storm." With the support of FEMA and federal funding, Cameron Parish and the state of Louisiana are working together to build a stronger and more resilient future.
