U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Elizabeth Warren have responded to a recent report that sheds light on a concerning issue: the sale of personal data belonging to U.S. service members. The report, published by Duke University, reveals that data brokers are selling sensitive information about service members to web addresses both within and outside the United States.

Dr. Cassidy emphasizes the urgency of addressing this issue, stating, "This report further solidifies the need to address this gaping hole in the protection of U.S. service members." He adds that the legislation he and Senator Warren have introduced aims to protect service members from having their personal information sold to countries like China and Russia, safeguarding national security and those who defend the nation.

Senator Warren echoes these concerns, highlighting the national security risks posed by the sale of service members' personal data. She emphasizes the need for robust guardrails to protect the data of service members, veterans, and their families.

The current situation allows lists of military personnel, along with information such as addresses, political beliefs, and lifestyle choices, to be legally sold to countries that pose a threat to national security, including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

In response to this alarming reality, Cassidy and Warren co-led the introduction of the "Protecting Military Service Members' Data Act of 2023" earlier this year. This legislation aims to prevent data brokers from selling lists of military personnel data, thereby safeguarding the personal information of service members. It would prohibit the sale, reselling, trading, licensing, or provision of military service members' data to adversarial nations.

The report from Duke University serves as a wake-up call to address the vulnerabilities in the protection of U.S. service members' data. With bipartisan support, Cassidy and Warren's legislation seeks to implement the necessary safeguards to ensure the privacy and security of those who serve and protect the nation.
