Repairs to a 6-inch water main on Plantation Drive have led to a boil water advisory, according to Barrett Dezendorf, Superintendent of Water Operations. The loss of water pressure during the repair process may have compromised the water quality in the affected area.
The Alexandria Water Department has issued a boil advisory effective immediately as a precaution. This advisory will remain in effect until further notice. The advisory affects all properties along Elliott Street highlighted in an attached map.
Residents and businesses in the affected area are advised to disinfect their water before consuming it, making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing foods. The recommended method is to boil the water for one full minute in a clean container. The one-minute count starts after the water has reached a rolling boil.
"Consumers in the advisory area should disinfect their water prior to consumption until otherwise notified," stated Dezendorf.
After the advisory is lifted, residents and businesses should take additional steps:
- Run cold-water faucets for one minute.
- Run drinking water fountains for one minute.
- Flush automatic icemakers by making three batches of ice and discarding them.
- Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.
- Run water coolers with direct connections for five minutes.
